TSF CMYK POS STACKEDThe Smith Family believes that education has the power to transform lives, not just minds. We help young people in need to fully participate in their education so they can create better futures for themselves.

The Smith Family works in partnerships with 13 schools across the Northern Territory in Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine and Alice Springs, Tiwi Islands, Ramingining and Borroloola. We work with local stakeholders and schools to meet the specific needs and opportunities available in each community. The Smith Family has won NAB Schools First awards with partner schools each year since 2009. The 2012 award was for our partnership with Gray Primary School.

The Smith Family has worked in partnership with Rosebery Middle School since the schools’ opening in 2011. Our main areas of focus at the school are supporting parent engagement and providing wrap-around support for students to encourage them to stay engaged in school.

Some of the programs we support at Rosebery Middle School include:

  • Learning for Life scholarships - Financial support for education-related purchases for low income families.
  • Student2Student - a reading program whereby students from Rosebery Middle School assist students from Gray Primary school with their reading by listening to them read over the phone.
  • Families and Schools Together (FAST) – an 8 week program run in Term 3 for Year 7 students and their families. FAST involves activities and strategies improve relationships between parents, their children and school.
  • Tutoring program – offered to selected scholarship students, this program runs once a week and aims to support students’ learning needs and challenge them to extend themselves.
  • Girls Step Up – these events are designed to inspire, challenge and provide information through ‘speed mentoring’ about different career pathways available to girls. The events also aim to raise the girls’ awareness of the many strong women in the community who are encouraging girls to achieve.
  • Strong Parents, Safe Students – workshops which encourage Indigenous parents to talk with each other about parenting in a way that empowers and supports them and their children.
